As a result of over 12 years of searching the 5 forest regions of Ontario, Dave Jolly, Senior Instructor of the EARTHQUEST Biological Field School, has produced his unique photo field manual on the Asters and Goldenrods of Ontario. This manual contains over 250 full colour photographs of 34 species of asters and goldenrods (2 varieties), including 6 Ontario Species at Risk (SAR) and 1 confusing look-a-like. Detailed technical differences and similarities between these plants along with Ecological Land Classification ecosite types, habitat, distribution, status (endangered, threatened, special concern, provincial and regional rank, etc.), distribution maps, confusing species which may be easily misidentified - eg. Crooked-stem Aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides) vs. Purple-stemmed Aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum), spring, summer, fall and winter photos of leaves, flowers, involucre bracts, disk florets as well as seasonal flowering dates.
